RECAP: Kalamazoo Takes Both Parts of Soccer Doubleheader

Tuesday was a winning night for the Kalamazoo College soccer programs at Mackenzie Field, as both the men and women earned wins over MIAA foes.   The Hornet women won the first contest 3-2 over Calvin College, followed by a 3-1 men’s victory over Olivet College.

In the women’s game, the Hornets scored first, but found themselves down 2-1 at half.   Libby Munoz scored all three Kalamazoo goals, including the game winner with under three minutes remaining.    Watch the winning goal here.

In the men’s game, two goals in the final seven minutes of the first half put the Hornets ahead over Olivet.  The Comets started the second with a quick goal, but Kalamazoo matched it about three minutes later.   Jacob Pink scored twice for the Hornets, both on penalty kicks set up due to hand-balls in the box.

PREVIEW: Kalamazoo College Hosts MIAA Soccer Doubleheader Tuesday

Coming up Tuesday, the Kalamazoo College women’s and men’s soccer programs will host MIAA rivals Calvin and Olivet at Mackenzie Field.   You can listen to both games via the Slocum Sports Network and watch both via the Kalamazoo College Livestream.

Up first at 5 p.m. is the women’s game against Calvin.  The Hornets sit at 6-5-0 overall and are tied for fourth in the MIAA at 5-3-0.    Calvin is second in the league at 6-2-0 and holds a 9-3-0 overall mark.   They opened MIAA play against each other back on September 6, a game won by the Knights 2-1.

The men’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. and is the first meeting this season between Kalamazoo and Olivet.  The Hornets are fourth in the MIAA at 3-3-0 and have a 4-5-1 overall mark.   The Comets are winless in the MIAA so far at 0-3-3 with an overall record at 1-7-3.

RECAP: Final Minute Kalamazoo Goal by Munoz Delivers First Defeat to Hope

It appeared that Kalamazoo College and Hope College were headed to overtime Thursday evening, but a goal by sophomore forward Libby Munoz with 32.6 seconds remaining gave Kalamazoo a 1-0 victory.     Watch the goal here.

Munoz’s team-leading sixth goal pushed the Hornets to 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in MIAA play. Hope drops to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in MIAA play.  Full stats from the match can be found here.

PREVIEW: MIAA Women’s Soccer Co-Champs Collide as Kalamazoo Hosts Hope

Thursday evening at 7 p.m., the Kalamazoo College Hornets and Hope College Flying Dutch meet for the first time in 2017 in women’s soccer.  Both finished at 12-2-2 last season in MIAA play, splitting the regular season crown.   Kalamazoo had the edge head to head, defeating Hope 1-0 in Holland, along with a 1-1 draw in their last meeting at Mackenzie Field.    Hope ended up with the MIAA tournament crown, defeating Alma in the final after Alma won in penalty kicks over Kalamazoo in the semifinal.

The Hornets sit at 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in MIAA play thus far.   They got Alma back with a 3-1 road win Monday and also flattened St. Mary’s 7-0.   Calvin (third in the MIAA last season) got the better of Kalamazoo 2-1 in Grand Rapids last week.     Hope is 5-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAA, shutting out Albion (3-0), Adrian (2-0), and Olivet (4-0) for their league wins.
