The Lakeview Spartans grabbed a key road victory Wednesday over SMAC East rival Kalamazoo Central, 25-18, 25-19, 18-25, 26-24. Lakeview was dominant early, leading the entire first set and all but the start of the second set. The Maroon Giants flipped the script in the third set and led nearly the entire way.
The decisive fourth set was one of swings. Kalamazoo Central started with an 8-3 lead, but Lakeview regained control midway through and led 20-16 at a timeout. The Maroon Giants evened it back up at 22-22 and had a set point chance at 24-23. The Spartans tied it back up on a kill, then got the final two points from a double-hit and attack error.
Unofficially, Sidney Schiller led Lakeview with 16 kills, followed by 11 from Karlie Kucharczyk. Kennedy Livers topped K-Central with 11. The Spartans improve to 25-7 overall with the Maroon Giants falling to 22-6-1. Both teams are now 2-1 within the SMAC East. Lakeview returns to action at home next Wednesday with Loy Norrix, while the Giants travel to the Mona Shores invite Saturday.

Listen live online Wednesday evening on the Slocum Sports Network to high school volleyball between the Kalamazoo Central Maroon Giants and Lakeview Spartans. It’s the third match for both squads within a stacked SMAC East division, which also features ranked squads from Mattawan and Gull Lake.
The Maroon Giants are 2-0 in divisional play thus far with wins over Battle Creek Central and Loy Norrix. Kalamazoo Central enters the week with an overall record of 19-5-1, with the Otsego quad Tuesday ahead of their meeting with the Spartans. Meanwhile, Lakeview is 1-1 in divisional play with a win over BC Central and a loss to Mattawan. They’re 24-7 overall and went 4-1 over the weekend in the Richmond invite, falling in the gold bracket final to Class B #1 Notre Dame Prep.
Both meetings last season between the Maroon Giants and Spartans were incredibly tight. Last October, Lakeview won a five-set match with the first four sets decided by either three or four points. Earlier in 2016, K-Central won a best of three tournament match over Lakeview with the first two sets both finishing 25-23.
Listen live to Wednesday’s match online on the Slocum Sports Network with first serve scheduled for around 6:30 p.m., pending the earlier JV matches.
The Kalamazoo Central Maroon Giants flattened the Lakeview Spartans in Battle Creek Monday, 6-1. K-Central needed only 3:03 to score the game’s opening goal, as Paulo Alcala put it in off a Nickolai Vargas corner.
Midway through the first, Breven Brill pushed the lead to 2-0. The Spartans had four corner kicks in the final ten minutes of the first half, but couldn’t convert. With 2:53 before halftime, freshman Ben Stafford took off and scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season for a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Lakeview found some hope on a Skyler Sebring score just over two minutes into the second. However, the Maroon Giants held them from there and added three more goals for good measure. Midway through the second, Vargas scored. In the 75th minute, Brill added his second of the game and less than a minute later, Terry Neuchterlein capped off the evening with the team’s sixth goal.
The win pushes Kalamazoo Central to 3-2 on the young season and gives them a win in their first match against a SMAC foe. They host another SMAC opponent, Lakeshore, on Wednesday. Lakeview drops to 1-2 and gets right back at it Tuesday at St. Joseph.
Listen back to Monday’s game below:
Listen live online Monday around 6:30 p.m. on the Slocum Sports Network to high school boys soccer with the Lakeview Spartans hosting the Kalamazoo Central Maroon Giants. It will be the first Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference (SMAC) and East division match for both squads.
The last two meetings between these schools were decided by one goal. Last season, Lakeview earned a 2-1 road victory. In 2015, the Maroon Giants grabbed a 3-2 win in Battle Creek.
Kalamazoo Central returns both of their 1st-team All-SMAC East selections from 2016. Ryan Halloran is back for his senior campaign with Paulo Alcala set for his sophomore year. The Maroon Giants also return honorable mention Dailon Brown, who is splitting team captain duties with Halloran. Lakeview returns one of their four 2016 1st-team players with senior defender Patrick Thang, along with honorable mention choice Chris Singh.
The Plainwell Trojans boys basketball team earned a home win Tuesday evening over the Lakeview Spartans 58-57 in what ended up being a game of bursts. The Trojans, now 3-1 on the season, controlled the first quarter and held a 17-8 lead after one. The Spartans, who fell to 1-4, roared back in the second quarter and briefly held a one-point lead on two occasions, before surrendering the lead 25-24 at the break.
Plainwell again pulled away, this time using a 19-3 run in the first five minutes of the third quarter for their largest lead of the contest. Lakeview got back within 14 for a 49-35 score after three.
The Spartans used pressure defense, steals, and blocked shots to stay in the game, eventually claiming the lead with 2:10 remaining. After trading the lead, Plainwell’s Luke Morrell scored on an offensive rebound to put the score at 58-57 with 5.5 seconds remaining.
Lakeview captain CJ Foster got the ball and drove into the paint for a shooting foul with 0.7 seconds remaining. However, he missed both free throws, keeping the score at 58-57 for the final. It was an uncharacteristically off night for the talented senior, who scored only one point. He was comforted by teammates and even opposing coach Dan Klein following the game’s conclusion.
Lakeview’s Anthony Evans led all players with 22 points. Cooper Grosteffon scored 14 with another 10 from Hunter Baize. Morrell topped the Trojans with 19. Another 16 came from Evan Finch.
Plainwell hits the road Friday with a trip to Allegan. Meanwhile, Lakeview is off until next Tuesday, when they host Portage Central.
The basketball season resumes for the Plainwell Trojans and Lakeview Spartans on Tuesday with the boys playing in Battle Creek and the girls meeting in Plainwell. The boys contest will be broadcast here as the debut contest for the Slocum Sports Network.
The sample size is small so far with Plainwell at 2-1 and Lakeview at 1-3. However, they do have one mutual opponent and the result favors the Spartans. Lakeview topped Portage Northern on December 13 by a 58-48 final. Meanwhile, Plainwell lost to the Huskies a week earlier in their opener, 82-58.
It’s hard to gauge teams this early in the season. Those games were already a few weeks ago and the holiday break and layoff can have an impact, especially in the first game back. Plainwell’s last win came in dramatic fashion, downing Paw Paw in overtime on a buzzer beater from from Luke Morrell.
Lakeview’s last contest was a rough loss to a 5-0 Kalamazoo Central squad 68-24, but their other three contests were all tight. After losing by five and two to Coldwater and Mattawan, respectively, they picked up their first win over Portage Northern.
It’s the third consecutive year these teams will meet with the previous two meetings going to the home team. Last season, Lakeview won 58-48 and two years ago, Plainwell took it 82-58.
Listen to the boys contest on the Slocum Sports Network. Coverage will begin a few minutes before tip-off, which is set for 7:15 p.m. pending the JV contest.
