The Gobles girls basketball team spoiled Hackett Catholic’s home opener Friday, using a 12-1 fourth quarter to secure a 36-23 Tiger victory. Neither team led by more than one possession in the first half, with Gobles holding two point leads at the end of the first, second, and third quarters. The Tigers had a 14-12 advantage at halftime and a 24-22 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Tigers built the lead to 28-22 midway through the fourth quarter. Gobles’ 2-3 zone defense was nearly impenetrable in the fourth, only allowing one point on a free throw in the final minute. Maddy Tiller topped Gobles with 16 points, all on two-point field goals. The Tigers limited Hackett’s Syndey Preston, who averaged around 16 per game last season, to a team-high of eight.
Gobles moves to 1-1 and has their home debut Tuesday against South Haven. Hackett begins 0-1 with a trip to Lawton ahead next Friday. Listen back to Friday’s game below:
