Listen live online Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Slocum Sports Network to the MHSAA District 19 boys soccer championship with the Coldwater Cardinals hosting the Marshall Redhawks. The winner advances to the Regional Semifinal round at Marshall Tuesday against either top-ranked Dexter or 13th-ranked Tecumseh.
This will be the third meeting this year between Marshall and Coldwater with the previous two both hosted and won 2-1 by the Redhawks. The first meeting came on August 31 and the second meeting was October 12 in the Interstate 8 Conference Gold Cup championship. Last season, Coldwater won twice in the regular season, only for Marshall to grab a 2-1 overtime win in the district semifinal.
Marshall, ranked sixth in the final Division 2 Coaches Association poll, moved to 20-2-1 overall following their district tournament wins over Western (2-1) and Charlotte (6-0). They are the defending district champions, getting knocked out by eventual state champion Mattawan in the Regional Semifinal last season.
Coldwater, seventh in the Division 2 poll, is 19-3-1 following wins over Jackson Northwest (7-0) and Mason (2-0). On their home field, they are 9-0-1, the lone draw coming against Mattawan. Despite numerous winning seasons recently, the Cardinals haven’t won a district championship in the 21st century.
Listen live to Saturday’s match online on the Slocum Sports Network with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. at Coldwater High School.
