After 100 minutes of play, neither the Comstock Colts or Fennville Blackhawks could score in their District 34 first round postseason soccer match Monday evening at Comstock High School. It was the Blackhawks getting the 7-5 edge in penalty kicks, advancing to the district semifinal Wednesday against Schoolcraft.
Unofficially, Comstock goalkeeper Logan Hicks made 15 saves, 12 of which came in the second half. Fennville keeper Andy Estrada made seven saves. For the shootout, Comstock put striker Evan Veenhuis in net.

The game should have been ended after Fennville got ahead following the seventh round, however the officials incorrectly opted for a second full set of five rounds. Per MHSAA rules:
“If score remains tied after each team has had five kicks: a) Each coach will select five different players than the first five who already have kicked to take the kicks in a sudden-victory situation, wherein if one team scores and the other team does not score, the game is ended without more kicks being taken.”
In the end, Fennville won anyway, avoiding a possible controversy. Fennville improves to 10-5-4 and Comstock’s season ends at 19-3-0. The Blackhawks host Schoolcraft in the semifinals Wednesday, start time to be announced.
