The Loy Norrix Knights ended their regular season Thursday with a 5-3 victory over the Kalamazoo Christian Comets. Originally scheduled as senior night for the Knights, the game was moved from Loy Norrix to K-Christian due to flooding on the Norrix field, then played on the Comet practice field due to JV football already having booked the main field.
The Comets started strong, scoring their first two goals within the first four minutes. Kyle Nash had the first score on an assist by Dawit Scheffers, followed by a Scheffers goal 20 seconds later. The Knights got on the board on the first of four goals by Naashar Leake midway through the half. Nathan Goodwin-Kelly evened the contest in the final minute of the first.
Leake gave Loy Norrix the lead in the 54th minute, then added his third goal in the 61st minute. Kalamazoo Christian got back within one on Scheffers’ second goal in the 66th minute. However, Leake delivered the final blow with four minutes to go for his fourth goal of the game.
Loy Norrix finishes the regular season at 8-11-1 overall and hosts Kalamazoo Central in their first round district game Tuesday at 6 p.m. Kalamazoo Christian finishes 9-6-2 and has the bye into the semifinal of their district at Bellevue. They’ll meet either Bellevue or Calhoun Christian Wednesday around 7 p.m.
