The Grand Valley State Lakers defeated the Western Michigan Stallions 6-2 Sunday at Wings Event Center in their first ever ACHA Division 3 meeting. The Lakers racked up 69 shots on goal to only 12 from the Stallions, although strong goaltending from WMU’s Jared Holsing kept the game from getting completely lopsided.
The first period was GVSU’s best, despite playing down a man for half of it due to two boarding majors. Three of their goals came within three minutes midway through the first period, coming from Brody Vanderlinde, Alex Bjork (4-on-4), and Billy Bonser. WMU’s Ryan Sutcliffe scored with 7:31 remaining on a 5-on-3 powerplay, followed by a Spencer Godin Laker goal two minutes later and a 4-1 Grand Valley lead.
The Stallions won the second period with Holsing making 21 saves. The frame’s lone goal came with 2:34 remaining from Nino Romita, putting Western back within two. Grand Valley resumed control in the third, scoring five minutes in from Corey Smith, then again with four minutes remaining by Austin Lipsey.
GVSU improves to 6-1-0 with the win and faces Oakland this weekend for a home-and-home. WMU drops to 1-5-0 and has two road games ahead Friday and Saturday at UM-Flint.
