The Calvin College Knights defeated the Western Michigan Stallions 7-6 Saturday at Wings West, giving Calvin a 2-0-0 start to their first season in ACHA Division 1. The Knights rushed ahead with goals from Jared Virtanen, Dean Griffin, and Christian Gums (powerplay) within the first 6:07. Griffin scored again midway through the first and Calvin carried a 4-0 advantage into the first break.
Western Michigan fired back, getting goals from Zachary Roberts and Christian Sana within the first three minutes of the second. Eight minutes in, Nick Sulen scored and put the Stallions back within one. However, Ryan Bradley put Calvin back up by two with eight minutes to go, followed by a 4-on-4 strike from Gums about 90 seconds later, giving Calvin a 6-3 lead into the second intermission.
The Stallions again scored fast to start the period, finding goals by Josh Kirsch and Brandon Grillo (powerplay) within the first 3:02. 30 seconds after Grillo’s goal, Virtanen pushed the Calvin lead back to two. Kyle Berry scored midway through the third and put Western Michigan again within one goal, but they were unable to even the contest in the final 9:31.
WMU had 40 shots on net to 28 for Calvin. In his first ever start, Calvin goalie Darin Fox made 34 saves. The Stallions started with Sam Woznicki in net, but pulled him for Myles Madden after the third goal of the game.
Western Michigan drops to 4-2-0, having lost in overtime at Calvin on Friday. WMU heads east to Buffalo next Friday and Saturday. The Knights start the season at 2-0-0, they have a home-and-home series Thursday and Saturday with Davenport.
