The Kalamazoo College Hornets started the men’s soccer season victorious at Mackenzie Field Saturday, defeating Millikin University 2-1. Both Hornet goals came from freshman midfielder Ryan Melgar in the second half.
Millikin had the game’s first goal with 2.4 seconds remaining in the first half from freshman Russell Pruitt. In the 63rd minute, a Bobby Dennerll corner kick allowed the former Portage Northern Husky Melgar to even the contest. In the 75th minute, Melgar found the net again with an assist from Ben Meschke. Griffin Hamel stayed strong in net for K, making 10 saves.
The Hornets move to 1-0 and have a trip to Carthage Tuesday. Millikin falls to 0-1-1 and returns to play next weekend at the Ohio Wesleyan Invite. You can view Saturday’s contest by clicking here.
