Tuesday’s baseball doubleheader at Portage Northern featured great starting pitching from both sides. The Portage Central Mustangs claimed game one 5-0, led by a no-hitter from future Michigan Wolverine Jeff Criswell. In game two, sophomore Husky Cam French pitched a shutout for a 3-0 Portage Northern win.
Jeff Criswell was dominant in game one, as he struck out nine with only two walks and two defensive errors leading to Husky baserunners. The Mustangs only got one run off Husky starter Tyler Helgeson, as Nick Nawrocki’s bunt single scored Bronson Wyman in the second inning. Helgeson went six innings, allowing one run, two hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Portage Central added cushion in the seventh against reliever Brendan Perry, with Criswell smacking a three-run homer and Max Longman stroking a solo shot.
In game two, Cam French scattered six hits with no walks and four strikeouts in a shutout for the Huskies. Two walks in the third set up a Brady Young two RBI double for Portage Northern in the third inning, with one more coming in the sixth. Zack Karbowski went 4.2 innings for Portage Central, allowing one hit, two runs, both earned, with six walks and nine strikeouts.
Portage Central moves to 12-13 following the doubleheader. They host district rival Kalamazoo Central Thursday. Portage Northern moves to 19-10 and also meets a district rival Thursday, traveling to Mattawan.
