The Detroit Dark Angels earned a road win over the West Michigan Mayhem 21-7 Saturday at Schoolcraft High School, snapping a two-year losing streak to the Mayhem and giving Detroit six wins in the last nine meetings against West Michigan.
Detroit used big plays for their first half scoring, striking first with 3:31 in the first quarter on a Tatyhana Pauling 75-yard run. At 4:06 in the second, Deirdre LaFrance found Zakiya Aniapam on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Both two-point conversion tries were denied by the Mayhem D for a 12-0 halftime score. Despite three first half Dark Angel fumbles and two Mayhem trips to the red zone, the Mayhem couldn’t score. They were held to three punts and three turnovers on downs.
West Michigan started the third quarter with a bang, getting a touchdown on their first play thanks to a 63 yard McGee Steffes run. The Mayhem forced a fumble on the following drive, but quickly punted it back. The Dark Angels got a 61-yard Aniapam touchdown run shortly thereafter with 6:01 in the third for a 18-7 score after another failed two-point conversion.
The next Mayhem drive went 16-plays and more than 10 minutes, but Detroit stopped them at the 10-yard line for a turnover on downs. The Dark Angels followed with a lengthy drive of their own, going 18-plays and draining the clock from 9:31 to 0:49, sealing the win on a 25-yard Anna Eshuis field goal.
Detroit moves to 3-3 overall and hosts the Cleveland Fusion next Saturday. West Michigan drops to 2-4 and travels Saturday to Wisconsin to meet the Madison Blaze. You can listen back to Saturday’s game below:
