Despite calls for severe thunderstorms, Thursday ended up being a pleasant evening for a baseball doubleheader at Kalamazoo Christian High School.   The Comets earned a huge 7-1 win over Division Four #1 Hackett Catholic in the first game, with the Irish getting the second game 7-2 in six innings.  The results put Hackett at 5-2 overall and 4-2 against the SAC Valley Division, with Kalmazoo Christian to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in Valley play.

The Comets led the entire way in game one, getting two runs in the bottom of the first inning off a two-RBI single by Jared Dirksen, scoring Alex Visser and Elliot Lemmer.  It was Dirksen’s pitching that led the way for the Comets, allowing only one run and six hits over a complete game victory.  Kalamazoo Christian added one more run in the second inning and four in the sixth, getting 10 hits total against pitchers T.J. Krawczyk and Joe Carr, who split the game’s six innings on the mound.   The lone Irish run came in the fifth inning.  Visser had three runs on two hits with Lemmer adding two runs on three hits.

Game two had a similar start for the Comets, getting two runs in the first inning,  The lead held until Hackett plated three in the third on two hits, two errors, and two walks.   The Irish got three more in the fourth, along with a solo run in the fifth.  After a tough first inning, Hackett starting pitcher Heath Baldwin settled in for a six-inning complete game, allowing only the two runs and six hits with five strikeouts.  He also added two singles and a run offensively.  Carr had three runs, one hit, and one RBI.

Both teams compete in tournaments Saturday.  The Comets head to Grand Rapids Christian, while the Irish play in the Huskie Invite against Portage Central and Vicksburg.     Meanwhile across the way, the Comet softball team earned two double-digit victories over Hackett.
