For the fifth consecutive season, the Kalamazoo Valley softball team earned a four-game season sweep over Lake Michigan College. The Cougars took the home half Tuesday with 8-0 and 2-1 victories over the Red Hawks, giving Kalamazoo Valley an eight-game win streak.
The first game was over quickly, lasting about a hour in total. The Cougars plated four runs in the second inning, two in the third, and one in both the fourth and fifth. Amber Foerster went 3-3 with two runs and two RBI, including a solo home run. Ally Sinclair went 3-3 with two runs. Kayli Bowen allowed three hits over the five-inning shutout.
In the second game, the Red Hawks used a two-out single by Angie White to get a run in the bottom of the first inning. They held the lead until a lead-off Amber Mazahem single in the bottom of the fifth led to the game-tying run. Sinclair got a lead-off walk in the sixth and used a wild pitch and error to score what would be the game winning run. Maggie Mullen pitched the entire game, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts. Ahna Riggenbach went six innings for Lake Michigan, allowing only the two runs (unearned), two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Lake Michigan drops to 9-13 in MCCAA play and 10-16 overall with a home doubleheader Friday against Grand Rapids. Kalamazoo Valley is 23-6 overall and 17-3 in league play, they’re set to travel to Jackson Thursday.
