Listen live Friday on the Slocum Sports Network to ACHA hockey with the Western Michigan Stallions hosting the 20th ranked Rochester College Warriors. It’s the first game of a home-and-home with WMU hosting Rochester at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo Friday at 7:30, followed by Saturday’s game at 1:30 from Suburban Ice in Macomb. Their rivalry has been incredibly competitive as the last ten meetings have all been decided by only one goal.
Both Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League teams are fighting for position in the final month of the season, trying to finish in the top 20 for a trip to Nationals. Rochester is currently right on the line at #20. They dropped one spot after losing both games last week of a home-and-home with #4 Davenport, 6-2 and 2-1. They’re 15-9-1-1 overall and 6-4 in official league games.
For the Stallions, they lost Sunday at Davenport 5-1, but earlier in the weekend swept then 22nd-ranked Indiana Tech with 4-2 and 8-3 finals. Despite the strong weekend overall, the Stallions only gained one spot in the latest rankings, moving to #27. Overall, Western Michigan is 13-12-1-1 with a 3-7-1-0 mark in league play.
These teams met for a home-and-home back in October with both games needing overtime. Western Michigan took both by finals of 4-3, with the game at WMU going to the shootout and the game at Rochester ending in OT on a Corey Siwula powerplay goal. The Stallions have won the last five meetings between the two teams. In their four meetings last season, Rochester won the first in October, then dropped the next three. Two seasons ago, Rochester took three of the four games.
Listen to Friday’s contest on the Slocum Sports Network, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.
