In both boys and girls action, Portage Central led the entire way en route to road victories over Portage Northern. The Mustang boys took a 58-43 victory and the girls dropped the Huskies 36-30.
The Mustang boys took a 10-4 lead after the first quarter, then extended it to 28-17 by halftime. They led by as much as 16, settling for a 12-point lead after the third and a 15-point margin of victory. Leading the way was a 24-point game from Austin McCullogh. Johnny Maier added 15. For the Huskies, Duane Jackson scored 15 and 14 came from Cameron French. The Portage Central boys move to 5-1 with the win and drop the Portage Northern boys to 3-5.
In the girls game, the Mustangs shutout the Huskies 12-0 through the first quarter, although neither added much more offense by halftime on a 16-6 score at the break. Both offenses picked up in the third quarter and the Mustangs extended their lead to 31-18. The Huskies started the fourth on a 7-0 run and made it back within four points late, but couldn’t ever get ahead. Central’s MacKenzie Pikkaart was the lone player to score double-digits, getting 11. Her team is now at .500, (4-4), with the Huskies falling to 4-6.
Portage Central returns to action Tuesday against Mattawan with the girls on the road and the boys at home. The Husky boys host Ostego Tuesday with the girls until next Friday at Benton Harbor.
